Sunday hunch

Ah, the joys of fantasy football.  You play a whole season with a great team, then have to have things decided by who added Rashad Jennings to their roster first this week, or whether or not a game will be played in a blizzard in Philadelphia.  You have MoJo?  Not today you don't.  You want 35 out of Michael Vick?  I don't think so.

Please give some sort of advantage in the playoffs to a great regular season team.  Not a big one, but, as a tiebreaker, the team with the higher playoff seed should win.  They earned an advantage.

Speaking of Jennings, he is a great play today against the Redskins.  He's over 100 with a score at the very least.

I'm also benching Ryan Torain, again.  I just don't see it, and the touchdown (on a 20+ yard catch, no less) was a fluke last week.

Start Aaron Rodgers.  I'm not worried at all about the concussion.  He should throw at least two TDs today in a game where I think we'll see some points.

With Andre Johnson looking doubtful, Jacoby Jones, Kevin Walter and Owen Daniels all see a boost in value against the Broncos.

Tim Tebow is very viable against Houston at home today.

How to address the Vikings and Eagles.  If they play in the snowstrom tonight, I think everyone gets downgraded.  Its hard to make calls on specific guys without knowing rosters, but if you have alternatives who are very close, I'd use them in almost all occasions.  Stopping short of benching DeSean Jackson for Nate Burleson of course, but I'd certainly play a guy like Kevin Walter or Jacoby Jones over Sidney Rice, for example.

Bowling for dollars

It's that time of year again, when we all get the chance to spend time with family while huddled around the TV to watch the Meinike Car Care Bowl.  Good times.

Actually, I like watching the bowl games to get a final chance to watch some players perform in a real game who are going to be makng an impact in the NFL.  To me, game tape is better than combine tape, and this is my last chance.  Here are some guys to watch, heralded and lesser known, who may be making a huge impact on (Thursdays, Saturdays) Sundays (and Mondays) next year.

Cam Newton, QB, Auburn
Cam is probably going to be the most talked about prospect heading into the 2011 draft, and I'm a fan.  He's better than Tebow was in college and his running abiltiy is going to be a boon for fantasy purposes.  He plays in the championship game against Oregon, you may have heard.

Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama
I'm a huge believer in Ingram as a pro and the comparison to Emmitt Smith is a good one.  If you watch him in the Capital One Bowl on January 1, watch for how good he is at maintaianing balance, breaking tackles and gaining tough yards.  He's a potential fantasy first rounder on the right team (Seattle?), and should be the first player taken in dynasty drafts.

AJ Green, WR, Georgia
Green was suspended early in the year, then lit the SEC on fire with nine TDs in the team's last eight games.  Green is 6'4, and has the athletic ability to dominate in the NFL.  He should be featured by the Bulldogs offense in the Liberty Bowl on New Year's Eve.

Julio Jones, WR, Alabama
Hard to separate Jones and Green.  To me they are the same guy, big and fast and good hands, thought Jones has known to play well down by the schoolyard.  He should be a touchdown machine in the NFL, and he'll join Ingram against Michigan State on January 1st.

Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
If you want another Sam Bradford (and I do), this is your guy.  He is a polished dropback passer with some mobility that should be the number one pick in the draft, should he declare.  Luck is a guy who is going to take a bit of time to make a fanatsy impact if he goes to a team like Carolina, but we thought the same thing about Bradford with the Rams.  Luck faces a decent Virginia Tech defense in the Orange Bowl on January 3rd.

Ryan Broyles, WR, Oklahoma
Broyles may be the guy I'm most excited to watch in the bowl games.  He's small (5'11), but he is the best WR going in college football, and I think he has a chance to be a very good NFL player, though he is likely a second rounder at best.  Broyles has over 2500 yards and has scored 28 TDs in the last two seasons for the Sooners, who play Connecticut in the Fiesta Bowl on January 1st.

Justin Blackmon, WR Oklahoma State
Blackmon joins Broyles as a very productive college WR without the fantastic measurables (he's only 6'1).  He plays big, but may be caught in between the slot type (Broyles) and the bigger outside WRs (Jones, Green), kinda like Michael Crabtree was two years ago.  I like Blackmon, because he seems to get open on every play (and because he had over 1600 yards and 18 TDs THIS YEAR), and it will be fun to watch him against Arizona in the Alamo Bowl on December 29th.

Jon Baldwin, WR. Pitt
Baldwin is interesting due to his size (6'5), but he doesn't have the production to go with the rest of these guys, as he amassed just 5 TDs this year.  Part of that surely has to do with bad QB play, but 810 yards and five TDs is still not enough for me.  Larry Fitzgerald didn't have Dan Marino throwing to him when he was at Pitt and he seemed to do OK.  The Panthers play Kentucky on January 8th in something called the BBVA Compass Bowl.

Others to watch...

Ryan Williams, RB, Virginia Tech
Wasn't as great this year as in 2009.  Could go back to school.  Orange Bowl, January 3rd.

LaMichael James, RB, Orgegon
He has the huge numbers, but were the solely due to the teams's incrdible offense?  He's also only 5'9.  Watch him in the title game.

Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas
He's huge and has a big arm.  Questions are about his mobility and accuracy.  He gets a nice test in the Sugar Bowl January 4th against Ohio Sate.

Jake Locker, QB, Washington
He'e the anti-Mallett.  Very mobile, good intangibles, but no gaudy numbers.  He also gets a big test in a rematch with Nebraska, who dominated the Huskies and Locker earlier in the year.  They face off December 30th in the Holiday Bowl.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays.  Catch you Sunday morning.

As Seen on TV

Does it matter anymore what I saw on TV?  I mean, if you're still alive in Week 16 you're a better fantasy player than I in 2010 and you should probably be sending me YOUR columns.  Of course, most of those columns would say, just add Mike Vick in Week 1 and you're golden.  Actually, one guy in a league I play in drafted Vick, and yes, he's the favorite in the Fantasy Bowl this week.

Anyway...

Tim Tebow is worth playing, for the rushing yards and TDs alone.  He plays Houston this week, and should be a top 10 QB option.

There is nothing to fear about the Vikings defense Sunday night.  Start all your Eagles with confidence.  That group looks cooked.

Matt Flynn, I apologize, but Rodgers should be back this week.

Don't get too excited about Rex and those Redskins.  I thought they were awful for much of that game, and the Jags should handle them Sunday.

LaGarrette Blount scored, but he was not in the game at the goal line.  They don't have a goal line back right now that they trust besdies Josh Freeman.

And Maurice Morris is clearly the Lions goal line back.  He's a decent play against Miami this week.

CJ Spiller had 11 touches Sunday.  He could be a sneaky pickup this week if you need a flex paly against New England.  There should be some points to be had in that game provided the weather cooperates.

This shouldn't be breaking news, but Ronnie Brown is ahead of Ricky Williams.  It'll be interesting to see what happens to those guys in the offseason.  I bet at least one won't be back.

Jamaal Charles 11-126, Thomas Jones 22-62.  I needed to mention that one more time this year.  I understand the need for rest, but the number or carries should be 2-to-1 in favor of Charles at the very least.

The Rams are going to be a fantasy gold mine for WRs in the near future.  I believe in Sam Bradford.

Tashard Choice > Felix Jones.  We've known this all year, right?  Goodbye, Marion Barber.

Jacob Tamme is more of a factor when Austin Collie is not in the game.  He's a nice play this week against Oakland.

No sneaky pickups tomorrow, so go get Morris, Spiller and Tamme.  I'm going to write my bowl column tomorrow or Thursday instead highlighting players you should be watching in the college bowl games that will be making an impact in fantasy leagues last year.

Sunday Hunch

I'm celebrating this morning as a Zack Greinke owner in my dynasty baseball league.  That's what you want to hear about right?  That and what the Governor of Missouri is up to?

Okay, football, but this still concerns the Governor of Missouri.

I know you aren;t with me, but I'm going to bat for Danario Alexander again against the Chiefs this afternoon.  And, apparently someone agrees with me, at least in the fact that this guy needs the football.

I hinted at this yesterday, but I was watching Keiland Williams steal the short yardage plays from Ryan Torain last week.  Most are saying to start Torain, I'm benching him at Dallas.

I think you have to bench all your Broncos receivers and all your Packers today with Orton and Rodgers out.  You can't even play Greg JenningsMoreno is tricky, and he's a low end start, and I'm also wondering if Tebow is going to run enough to be a sneaky play in two QB leagues?

I don't think you can start anyone in the Steelers-Jets game either.  Low point totals, and I'd be surprised if the Jets don't step up huge on defense here.

Oh yeah. This is the call of the week.  Start Vincent Jackson against the 49ers.

Only weather game today is in Oakland, where the rain is apparently going to be a major factor.  You can still start McFadden though.

Cheers,

Just thinkin' about tomorrow

It's Week 15, and it comes with a little sadness for me, as I've only got one team left and their momentum has faded.  As a matter of fact, I thought I heard my baloon pop Thursday night when Vernon Davis' image was stamped to milk cartons, but I'll wait until Monday night to be sure.

Anyway, what will I be watching for this week to prepare for Week 16 analysis (and next year)?

The Redskins RB situation.  Many love Torain this week, but I wonder if Keiland Williams won't end up stealing the small amount of value that's left in that offense with Sexy Rexy at the helm.

Let's stay in Dallas and look at the Cowboys RBs too.  If Barber plays, it's back to Ghidrah.  If he doesn't, will Choice be a TD option.  I'm benching him for Blount in my close call of the week, but it is closer than you think.

And that's because of the presence of Earnest Graham.  I dealt Peyton Hillis in my dynasty league because I had Blount primed for these next two weeks when he faces Detroit and Seattle.  Now I'm a bit remorseful with Graham stealing the goal line.  Another reason for remorse?  John Skelton.  I dealt Hills and Crabtree for Fitzgerald.

Is Kerry Collins going to join the line of QBs to light up the Texans?

And how about that Andre Johnson-Cortland Finnegan rematch?  I'd put the dough on the Texans trying to get Andre off in the grudge match.

Sam Bradford gets back to the friendly confines and faces a reeling Chiefs pass defense.  The question is, who gets the TDs for the Rams?  It's been a mystery all year.

Will Matt Cassel play?  If he doesn't, will Brodie Croyle top 50 yards?  Dwayne Bowe just murdered fantasy teams last week.

Austin Colllie or Pierre Garcon?  Both appear set to go, and I want to know which is the better play next week.  I'd lean Pierre for this week, just to the the recurrance potential with the concussion.

Is Joe Webb the death blow for Adrian Peterson?  Remember, AP has endured Tarvaris before and kept on trucking.

Tim Tebow!  Lots of QB situations could really effect things down the stretch.  The lesson?  It's always a good idea to have players with the most stable QB situations in place.

Mike Vick gets his toughest matchup of the year at New York.

Who's running the ball these days for New Orleans?  Ivory appears to be toast.

Carolina and Arizona.  Wow, which of Hightower or Stewart has the bigger game?  Both should thrive, and I'm dying for a Fitzgerald TD.

We've been waiting all year for Week 15, Ronnie Brown versus the Bills at home.  Can he reward everyone?  An by everyone of course, I mean my team that lost last week with Ronnie Brown getting me five points.

Matt Flynn will destroy the value of the entire Packers offense if he plays.  Trust me.  If Rodgers isn't looking like the starter by noon, I'd be looking at other options for all those guys.

Have fun everyone.

TFAM

Who's in, who's out?

I'm in an awful place.  Only one of my three teams is still alive, and my players are relying on Alex Smith, Joe Webb, and John Skelton to get them the ball.  Ugh.  Vernon Davis has zero catches in the third quarter.  I HATE the 49ers coaching staff.

Anyway, last year I received some positive feedback about my reflective columns about which players were and were not on playoff fantasy teams in my three leagues.  This year, I again played in three, and these are the players that made the playofss in all three leagues.

Note:  Players had to contribute in a difference-making manner to be considered...

Ben Roethlisberger
Jon Kitna
Sam Bradford
Matt Forte
Chris Johnson
Jamaal Charles
Darren McFadden
LeSean McCoy
Marques Colston
Greg Jennings
Dwayne Bowe
Terrell Owens
Wes Welker
Donald Driver

That's it.  Pretty interesting, and certainly a who's who when it comes to breakout performers this year.  With the exception of Michael Vick, Hakeem Nicks and Arian Foster, I'd argue that many of these guys have been THE difference makers in leagues this year.  McFadden, McCoy, Bowe and Owens certainly exceeded expectations, and isn't it interesting that Chris Johnson had a down year and it was still good enough to get it done?  Makes a nice argument for just taking the best guy in an auction and then letting the chips fall.

Next week, we'll look at players than made the playoffs in none of my three leagues.

Sneaky Pickups

It happens more often than you think.

No, I'm not talking about my watching of Pussycat Dolls videos.

Teams that make the fantasy final four are thought to be complete squads that don't need any of the fodder that may be hiding on the waiver wire this time of year.  Maybe sometimes, sure.  But I bet Patrick Jeffers and Jerome Harrison are wearing their share of fantasy jewelry as well.

Who's out there that can make a difference this week?

I talked yesterday about Tim Hightower and Javarris James.  Both are fantasy starters this week unless we see a change of status regarding Joe Addai or Chris Wells.

What about everyone's favorite three TD QB Kerry CollinsCollins draws the Texans defense which just has to be worth 200 and two at a minimum.

That same Texans defense certainly brings Nate Washington and, on the off chance he was dropped, Kenny Britt into play.

And, for those of you in TD only leagues, Earnest Graham faces the Lions, and he got the goal line last week.

Bonus column tomorrow.  Players that made the playoffs in all three of my leagues, and what that says.

As Seen on TV

So, I was talking to a colleague today who was close to being named The Fantasy Answer Woman this season, due to her ability to make the right lineup calls week in and week out (and having the foresight to draft Hakeem Nicks and Arian Foster -- she liked the names!).  Unfortunately, TFAW lost her first round playoff matchup this week by a scant few points.  Hey, it happens, right?  No shame in making the playoffs and losing in round one.  Especially when the two guys you relied on most (Foster and Nicks) both fail to get in the end zone.  BUT....

She started Earl Bennett and Mike Thomas over Malcom Floyd, which cost her the win.  Now, Bennett has been superb, Thomas decent, and Floyd no great shakes since he came back from injury.  Still, you simply cannot lose in the fantasy playoffs by being asleep at the wheel.  It was widely reported that New England and Chicago were contesting their game Sunday on the equivalent of Planet Hoth in Soldier Field.  There simply was no way Bennett was the correct call over Floyd.  No way.  And it cost her a shot at a fantasy title.  No excuse for that, except that she's pregnant and needed a nap.  Awwww.  I have a soft spot for pregnant women these days.

Anyway, in short.  Lose in the playoffs, fine.  But don't lose making errors that simply cannot be made.

What else did I see watching the games Sunday besides frozen wampa?

Brandon Jacobs looks like he has his swagger (and his starting gig) back.  He's a fantasy starter the rest of the way on most teams, even if he splits the goal line touches with Bradshaw.

I know Jacoby Jones has not met expectations this year, but Monday was certainly a momentum gaining performance.

I'm worried about AP, yes, but you have to start him against Chicago next week.  The rest of the Vikes are all bench guys.

If you're straw grasping, Javarris James got 17 carries last week and he's got six TDs in his last six games.

Tim Hightower 18-148-2.  He plays the Panthers next week, which just so happens to have ceded three rushing TDs to EACH of Peyton Hillis, Marshawn Lynch and Michael Turner in the past three weeks.

You have to like Jon Stewart in that game too.

Earnest Graham was in at the goal line when I saw the Bucs at the one.  Poor LaGarrette Blount owners with the Lions coming to town.

For all those that watched Ryan Torain threaten to break AP's rushing record (at least for a half), Keiland Williams was the short yardage guy.

What has happened to the quarterback play in this league.  If you are getting paid a million dollars as a backup QB can't your team depend on you for more than 40 yards passing Brodie Croyle?  I can;t even come to terms with how embarrassing the Chiefs performance was.

Chad Henne, you aren't getting off the hook either just because your team won.  Five completions?

There's no question that Alex Smith swirls the Ghirardelli more efficeintly than Troy Smith in San Francisco.  That's great news for Vernon Davis, though my friends have put out APBs in recent weeks regarding Michael CrabtreeMaybe he moved to Green Bay?

I have no idea what is wrong with Danario Alexander, but I take full responsibility if you have kept the faith.  I think you've been defriended by all but one, Danario.

Finally, I have never seen a quarterback run like Sam Bradford did Sunday chasing down Roman Harper.  Good for you Sam, now throw it to 84!

Cheers,
TFAM

Thanks for nothing

Sunday hunch

If you go to http://www.accuweather.com/ this morning, you'll see that CHI-NE, CIN-PIT, MIA-NYJ, CLE-BUF, and TB-WAS are absolutely going to be weather games.  It will be hard to start the passing games of any of those teams, but it may be unavoidable, I suppose.  If that's the case, I guess I'd bet on the Wes Welker types over the Mike Wallace types just because of the difficulty with lengthy passes in difficult conditions.

One more thing to think about with these conditions are kickers.  It may behoove you to add one of the kickers with better conditions today, such as Josh Brown of St. Louis.  Conversely, maybe the Bills or Browns defense can help you out depending on your league's scoring system.

I have a hunch that Tashard Choice outplays Felix Jones tonight for the second straight game.

Also, Roy Williams is a great sneaky play against the Eagles defense.

I know the Falcons are great against the run, but I'd start Jonathan Stewart today with confidence.  I think he gets close to 100 and a score.

I think Alex Smith is great for Vernon DavisVD is a lock to score today and Smith will put up starter worthy numbers.  I think San Francisco will blow out Seattle.

Just thinkin' about tomorrow

I'm actually going to start by thinking a bit about what happened the other night.  As I was watching the Titans-Colts game (otherwise known as the gift from the gods to those dumb enough to have started Kerry Collins -- that's me!), I started thinking about Chris Johnson and his struggles this year.  I'm not going to pretend to know if CJ is worn down, playing behind a worse line, or just not getting any support from a passing game.  However, it is indisputable that his numbers are way down from 2009, and that got me wondering.  Will the Titans bring in another back to take some of the workload away from Johnson in 2011?  Will they opt to increase the load for current backup Javon Ringer?  It's at least worth thinking about considering Johnson's struggles.  Many NFL teams have cut into their stars' touches for less defensible reasons.  It's worth thinking about, at least for keeper leaguers at this point right now.  How much value would Johnson lose if they stripped away his goal line touches?

Anyway, here is what I'm thinking about...looking forward.

Weather, weather, weather.  It's going to play a major factor tomorrow.

Will 49ers RB Anthony Dixon claim the role?

How is Ryan Torain going to fit into the Redskins backfield?  Is he really healthy?

No Asante Samuel for Philly.  Exactly how many points are we going to see in Dallas tomorrow night?  Start EVERYONE.  We haven't seen a game with more fantasy potential than the Broncos-Chiefs tilt last week that ended 10-6.

How are we supposed to view Brandon Jackson-James Starks and Darren McFadden-Michael Bush in light of Starks and Bush getting more carries last week?

Is the Seattle passing game dead?  No Williams, no ObamanuBrandon Stokley?  Ugh.

I'm looking forward to seeing the Chargers offense.  Ryan Mathews?  Mike Tolbert?  Floyd?  V-Jax?  I think Floyd is a nice play.  The rest are dice rolls.

Pierre Thomas is supposed to return to the Saints lineup.  Just in time to kill everyone who made a late push using Chris Ivory these last few weeks.

John Skelton is now in charge of keeping Larry Fitzgerald's fantasy season alive.  We wish you well.

And of course, the weekly confession of love for Danario Alexander.  This week he's scoring three times.  Or once.

Cheers,
TFAM

Sneaky Pickups

And it has come to this.

Really, this is no more a pickups column than it is a eulogy of my season in one of my leagues.  I made the playoffs in two of three leagues, but one team is almost certainly bowing out this week.  Why am I so confident?  Well, remember way back in August when I was touting two QB leagues as the only way to play fantasy football?  Well, I'm singing a different tune now after hitching my season to Vince Young's shoulder pads and Matt Cassel's useless appendages for my playoff run.  Yep, it may be Kerry Collins and Brody Croyle (yes, he of the 0-9 career record as an NFL starter) driving my clown car into the ground this week in my most important league.  Such is life when you do play two QB football and all the guys are taken, and shame on me for not putting myself in a better position.  I mean, we all saw this appendectomy coming, right?

Anyway, James Davis, Tashard Choice, and James Starks all popped up this week as viable fantasy options going forward at the running back position.  If I had to rank them I'd go Choice, Starks, Davis, mostly because the Cowboys miraculously have fewer cooks in the kitchen right now than the Packers or Redskins.

However, the real sneaky pickup this week may lie at the WR position, as Roy Williams may once again rise to fantasy prominance the rest of the way.  With Dez Bryant out, Williams gets Philly, Washington and Arizona the next three weeks, which sets up pretty nicely.  I think he's an add in every league right now.

Good luck, and think of me when the Colts are wiping with Kerry Collins towel tomorrow night.

Cheers,
TFAM

As seen on TV

It's pretty crazy watching the difference between Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes as far as catching a football.  You might even go as far to say one can catch while one cannot.  It's probably that simple.  This game isn't over (it's halftime).  Remember the Jets crushed the Pats in the second half earlier this year.

I saw a few more things of interest while watching yesterday that I'd like to share.  As always, in no particular order...

Anthony Dixon was used inside the five for the 49ers and looks to be the more valuable guy in that backfield.  It may not be close.

James Starks?  Yep, the guy many thought may be a factor at some point this year has emerged just after most who took a flier cut him loose.  If you didn't see the box score, Starks' 18-73 was a stunning development considering Brandon Jackson had just four carries.  Further complicating matters is the continued presence of John Kuhn, who ran in a goal line score.  Starks is worth a look though.

I have a feeling Ray Rice is likely to be the least valuable player in fantasy this season.  Or Chris Johnson.  Or Larry Fitzgerald, but at least we saw that one coming.  Or (crap) Shonn Greene.  Or Ryan Mathews (winner?).

I think Derek Anderson's play is funny.  Funny enough that I was talking to my friend about it on the couch yesterday while my fantasy team was taking a beating.  We were laughing together.  Is that cool if your fantasy team is losing?  If he really cared as much as he said he'd hold the clipboard for the rest of the season.

It's hard to look as bad as Marshawn Lynch did yesterday in a 25+ point fantasy day.  He just has little to offer other than this one moment to sell high.

Felix Jones 22 carries, Tashard Choice 19.  Choice got the money zone.  It's very much worth paying attention to Choice for this year and beyond.

Jahvid Best looked healthier yesterday than I've seen him in a month.

Seven (of the team's 28) targets for Danario Alexander.  My love will not let you down.

Tim Hightower 15 carries, Beanie Wells 3.  Does it matter with their QB situation?

No AP injury issues going forward.  He looked very good.

I think we can play the Giants backs just like Miami's duo.  They'll split the workload in all situations pretty evenly.  Slight edge to Bradshaw as a pass catcher, and for being a bit less crazy.

That Tennessee offense is tragic right now.  Six points at home against the Jags?

Cheers,
TFAM

Sunday hunch

I'm watching an interesting report by Ed Werder (who always does great work) on ESPN right now about the Chiefs.  Seems they will not let bygones be bygones in regards to the beating they took at Mile High Stadium a few weeks back.  If you remember, Chiefs coach Todd Haley wouldn't shake Josh McDaniels hand, feeling the Broncos ran up the score on his Chiefs.  Incidentally, that may mean Haley doesn't have Dwayne Bowe on his fantasy team (as has been suspected in light of Bowe's recent Jerry Rice impression), becuase said running up the score was very good for the fantasy numbers of Bowe and Matt Cassel, who put together one of the all time garbage performance games that day as a result.  Anyway, should we expect the Chiefs to keep the foot on the gas today if they get a nice lead over Denver?  This one should be a shootout.

I have a few other hunches today as we move into must win terrotory for many fantasy teams out there.

I have a hunch, and I know the stats don't back this up, that the Bears struggle today.  Not sure why, I just smell it.  I know you're salivating with the Lions matchup, but I'm just saying, I don't think Cutler, Knox and Forte are must plays today.

I also have a hunch Anthony Dixon outscores Brian Westbrook the rest of the way.  Today though, the Niners are likely to be playing from behind against Green Bay, so I'd stick with Westbrook.

Speaking of the rest of the way, I'm in favor of Mike Hart over Donald Brown today and for the rest of the season.  Just make sure Hart plays before you lock him in.  It's a late game.

Danario Alexander is scoring today.

You want a sleeper today?  How about Derek Hagan of the Giants?  The Redskins defense is in big trouble.

Speaking of the Redskins, if you want to roll the dice, Ryan Torain is inactive (as expected) you want to play Shanahan roulette with James Davis?

Also out today are Percy Harvin, Brandon Marshall, and Pierre ThomasAdrian Peterson is in.

Just thinkin' about tomorrow

I've already got my eye on Cameron Newton in my dynasty draft next year.  He's awfully impressive, and I think he and Andrew Luck are both going to be impact fantasy QBs down the road.  Newton's better than Tim Tebow was, that's for sure.

Anyway, Week 13 is the week of the running back as far as storylines go.  No fewer than 10 NFL teams have running back situations that are a bit muddled at the moment.  I'll be keeping an eye on all ten tomorrow.  In no particular order...

Dallas loses Marion Barber, so what does that do for Tashard Choice?

Washington is permaflux capacitor this point, but Ryan Torain is a game time decision, and James Davis has been creeping up the depth chart.  This one week after we thought Keiland Williams was an emerging talent.

San Diego has the ever injured Ryan Mathews and the newly dinged Mike Tolbert.  I like Mathews if Tolbert doesn't go and it's a great matchup, but I can't LOVE a guy with that ankle situation.

Adrian Peterson looks like a go for Minnesota, and you have to play him, let's just hope he makes it through the game.  Gerhart is incidentlally a great start if AP sits.

Is Pierre Thomas coming back for New Orleans?  I'll believe it when I see it.  Has Reggie Bush recovered from that tryptophan coma he was in 10 days ago?

What will be the distribution between Westbrook and Dixon in the San Francisco backfield?

Jacobs, Bradsahw, Bradsahw, Jacobs.  Neither?  Both?  I say both.  It's the Redskins!  Flex plays.

Do we really have to pay attention to Maurice Morris?

I think Mike Hart is your guy in the Indy backfield, and he could be really interesting down the stretch.  Careful though, it's a late game and Hart is questionable.

I think this is the week that Jon Stewart emerges over Mike Goodson in the Pathers backfield.  Stewart was huge in the fantasy playoffs last year, BTW.

That's ten.  My favorite non RB storyline of the week?  The continuing emergence of Rams WR Danario Alexander.

Sneaky Pickups

A couple weeks back, I wrote in this space that you'd be better of handcuffing your stud RBs than taking chances on some flier running backs.  Well, Frank Gore owners may have done that, and they are still upset with me today.  Why?  It's Brian Westbrook that everyone wants, not Anthony Dixon, on the heels of Westbrook's breakout performance Monday night in Arizona.

Is Westbrook really the guy you want in the San Francisco backfield?

Maybe not.  First, Anthony Dixon did score as well in the game, and he's got the build to be used at the goal line, making it likely he'll fill that role.  On top of that, the 49ers have come out and said (and it makes sense) that they cannot expect Westbrook to handle a 23 carry workload every week.  Now, the news today is that Westy missed practice with an ankle injury.

So, what to make of all of this?

I think Westbrook will go Sunday, but he is unlikely to hold up to a large workload, being that it's something he couldn't do in his younger days in Philly.  I'd expect a 60/40 breakdown in carries with Westbrook/Dixon, with Westbrook handling third down and Dixon getting the stripe.  Basically, that means they each have roughly the same value, which is going to be about half of the value that Gore had in this offense as Frank was used in all the aforementioned roles.  Still, with a home game against Seattle coming up in what could be a pivotal Week 14 game for your squad, these guys do have value.

Outside of the Bay Area, there are other guys to look at as well.

I mentioned Kerry Collins last week and still think he's a good add in two QB leagues.

Obviously I think Danario Alexander should be owned.  Ben Obamanu too.

James Davis is worth a flier if you have the roster space.  Who knows what will transpire in Washington, but we've seen randon Shanahan guys tilt the balance in playoff matchups before.

Finally, Mike Hart appears to be on his way back in Indy, and I could see him being the most valuable back for that team the rest of the way.  The time to add him is upon us.

Cheers,

As seen on TV

It's almost like ESPN is trying to make us more interested in next week's Monday nighter (Jets-Pats) than the rest of thegame tonight, which has revelaed that Derek Anderson has moved into Tyler Thigpen range and that Brian Westbrook appears to be the guy if Frank Gore misses any games (he is injured tonight).

Yesterday, I saw a few things of interest as well.

Let's just forget anything that was ever said about Rusty Smith in this space last week.  Thank God I didn't have a hunch.  I wouldn't be surprised to see Kerry Collins back next week.  He was active Sunday.

Peyton Hillis is old news.  What I cannot figure out however, is how the Browns can justify going away from the run after building a huge first half lead.  They turned 21-7 into 21-17 in a matter of seconds by allowing Delhomme to be himself.  Run the ball Cleveland.  By the way, if is wasn't for Evan Moore's fumble at the one, Hillis would have gone Abe Lincoln on us (four score?).

Mike Goodson has replaced DeAngelo Williams, which means of course that both he and Stewart lose much of their value.  I'm not expecting 250 total yards from the pair next week.

Toby Gerhart is going to be a top 10 option next week if AP can't go.  He looked good, and Buffalo is coming to the dome.

Another very pedestrian day for LaGarrette Blount.  He is not the long term answer there.  If you're in a keeper league and you aren't playoff bound.  Sell him while you have the chance.

Danario Alexander is back and he's the number one WR in St. Louis as long as he remains healthy.  He looked great.

Which reminds me.  I saw (or heard) the question asked this week about who should dynasty leaguers add now for the future that may be on the waiver wire?  The answers given were Kevin Kolb and Owen Daniels.  Really?  Owen Daniels?  Kolb?  I can find a mediocre tight end and quarterback any time.  In my game, we play upside.  That means the correct answers are Alexander, Tashard Choice, and Jacoby Jones.

I think Donald Driver is done.  Both James Jones and Jordy Nelson have passed Driver in Aaron Rodgers pecking order.  They are both more explosive.  Maybe I should cut Driver some slack with the injury...

It looks like the Giants number two WR is...Kevin Boss?  He targets (eight) doubled anyone else.  I still count Manningham as the one with Nicks and Smith sidelined.

Kyle Orton scores just an incredible number of garbage time fantasy points.

Courtesy of reader Kieron, we have the Deep Freeze.  Great, more reasons to stop the ascension of Jamaal Charles to leader of the free world.  Still, I'm happy to say, "Take that Thomas Jones!"  The Deep Freeze is on.

Sunday hunch

I forgot yesterday to put a bow, or should I say break the wishbone, on Thursdays games.  Why aren't the Cowboys getting the ball to Dez Bryant?  Just baffling that he and Miles Austin combined for three catches and 25 yards.  Nice work, Princeton grad.

Anyway, here is what I see happening in the NFL action today.

I know he has been brutal, but something tells me we'll see a nice effort out of Ronnie Brown today.  I'm starting him, and I think we'll see some wildcat.

Even in non TE mandatory leagues, you are starting Jacob Tamme tonight against the Chargers.

Start him, not him?  Start Steven Jackson against a shady Broncos defense.  Sit Matt Forte against the Eagles.  That guy has no value with Chester Taylor more involved.  I'd rather start Keiland Williams than Forte, for one.

You know who else I love today?  Mario Manningham.  Both Nicks and Smith are out.

Finally, one waiver wire sleeper?  How about Ben Obamanu?  He's scored in two of three and he'll get more than five targets if Mike Williams sits, which he is likely to do.

Cheers,

Just thinkin' about tomorrow

How about the performance of the day Saturday turned in by Dimitar Berbatov of Manchester United?  The Bulgarian striker netted five goals Saturday swinging the balance of fantasy soccer leagues everywhere.  What? This isn't a soccer blog?  Sure it is.  Any question, any sport, anytime.

Here is what I'm looking forward to watching in the NFL tomorrow.

I think Danario Alexander is coming back for the Rams.  You know I love that guy.  No more knee surgeries please.

Will the coaching change ignite the Vikings offense?

I've seen Dmitri Nance of the Packers picked up this week.  Let's see if he becomes the goal line back.

Two great games in a row for Fred Jackson, but the buck stops against Pittsburgh, right?  Just how good is this Buffalo offense right now?

Rusty Smith, welcome to the gluttonous party that the Texans defense throws weekly for opposing quarterbacks.

Will Gradkowski do enough to grab hold of the Raiders job or are we going to have to deal with a weekly bait-and-switch?  I'm not really sure what a bait-and-switch is, by the way.

Jonathan Stewart looks like he'll return.  Does that mean the full workload or will there be a split it Goodson?  I'd bet on the latter.

Who is going to step up in the Giants passing game?

Also, will Brandon Jacobs be more valuable than Bradshaw now that he's once again been anointed the starter?

Chad Henne looks like he'll restore some sort of competence to the Miami offense.  Will Brian Hartline step up?

With Mike Williams looking shaky, can Ben Obamanu continue to step up?  Obi-wan has been good over his last three games.

Finally, I'm starting to think we're going to see more and more of Tim Tebow in the coming weeks. Maybe not while they are still mathematically alive, but I'm not feeling secure with any of my Broncos right now.  Kyle Orton included.

Cheers,
TFAM

Sneaky Pickups and Turkey Time

How are you feeling about Rusty Smith?  Yeah, me too, but the Texans are on the schedule twice in the next four weeks for the Titans, and the Texans are the golden goose for opposing passing games.  If there was ever a time to play Rusty, it's this week, and I'm going to say he's available.  Two QB leagues only please!  Also, Kerry Collins is probably out there, and if you want to add and stash for the playoffs, he should get the Texans at home in Week 15.

Who else may be available?  How about Tashard Choice?  I've talked him up here before, but Felix Jones os hurt and the Cowboys offense it rolling again.  I think Choice is at least a marginal starter if Felix doesn't play.

Two more guys that are surley available that can help in the passing game are Brian Hartline and Jimmy GrahamHartline takes over the role as the number one WR in Miami with Brandon Marshall hamstrung for at least a couple of weeks.  I know Bess is still in play there, but he's forever a number two as a slot guy.  Hartline has topped 70 yards in three straight with Marshall there and has five catches in four of his last five games.  If Chad Henne plays, I think Hartline can be a good yardage play down the stretch.  Graham may not be a household name, but he's huge (6'8) and he's starting to produce as a tight end in a pass heavy offense (New Orleans).  Over his past two games, Graham has eight grabs for 121 yards and a score and is becoming more involved.  Remember, Jeremy Shockey is not expected to play tomorrow against Dallas.

Who do I like tomorrow?  I think both Patriots running backs are in play, but I'd shy away from Detroit's tandem.  I like both the Saints and Cowboys passing games a lot, and think that Dallas' running game is in play too.  As far as the night game, I guess LT is a starter and you almost have to start Santonio right now, but I'm seeing fewer points in that one that the early games.

Happy Thanksgiving,
TFAM

As Seen on TV

So, an owner in one of my leagues had the audacity to call me out (as the commissioner) for not adjusting his lineup appropriately for this week when he said the website wouldn't allow him to set his lineup.  The problem was that he already had Chester Taylor and Devone Bess started Thursday (yeah, his team is terrible) and (surprise!) it wouldn't let him take them out after they had already played.  Yet somehow it was my fault for not chaning his lineup?  I suppose it was my fault too for the eight players he started on bye weeks in the four previous weeks?  Where has this guy been, Africa?

As it turns out, he has been in Africa, but that is beside the point.  Leagues where owners are absent aren't fun at best and they're unfair at their worst.  An owner who doesn;t manage their team actually can alter where the money ends up just as much as a powerhouse team can.  It is a total joke, and I'm embarrassed to be a part of the league.  Next year, that league goes and a new keeper league begins.  I'm taking applications...

Anyway, here's what I saw watching the games this Sunday when I wasn't sending texts taunting my buddy about starting Randy Moss.  He said I told him too.....yeah, right?  Wait, I did?

Interesting to see Jackie Battle steal a goal line carry in Kansas City for the second game in a row.  I think I'm done expecting a Jamaal Charles breakout.

Just looked this up today.  Top five WRs this year?  White, Lloyd, Bowe, Owens, Calvin.

Perfect reason why you put more value in #1 WRs.  Larry Fitzgerald gets a garbage TD on the last play of a 31-13 loss.  Why?  Because he's Larry Fitzgerald.  Teams try to feed these guys their stats.

Brandon Jacobs and Marion Barber, fraternal twins doomed to the same fantasy fate.  Mediocre short yardage backs on teams that throw inside the five.

Very nice to see a one yard TD from Ray Rice.  Sell high?  No way, Tampa, Houston, New Orleans, Cleveland coming up.  Only Pitt in week 13 to worry about.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Mike Goodson play for the rest of the year...22-120 against Baltimore is no joke either.

Back to Keiland Williams in Washington, but 23-68 is not inspiring.

It figures that Cedric Benson would have his best game when everyone starts pimping Bernard Scott.

I'm ready to say LaGarrette Blount isn't very good.  It doesn't mean he can't be a useful fantasy guy (still love the playoff sked) but I've seen him stuffed too often at the goal line (including two straight carries Sunday) to make me that excited.

Mulligan for Troy Smith.  I'd buy low on Gore and Vernon if I didn't have them already.

Chris Ivory gets the goal line (and just about everything else) in New Orleans. Proof that this game can be almost improssible to call.

Kyle Orton looked awful last night.  If you pass 65% of the time though, the stats will come.  I'd be careful of Orton in a keeper league though.

Vincent Jackson returns Sunday night.

I'm still starting LT over Shonn.  It's the catches (7-71) and the fact that he'll still get the goal line.

Cheers,
TFAM

Sunday Hunch

It's time, actually past time...but I did just finish Sunday brunch.

I've got a hunch today that Brett Favre is more than playable.  He's a starter against Green Bay.  Play him with confidence.

I've also got a hunch about Julius Jones.  He's on your waiver wire.  I think he is a possible starter today too.

I think Nate Washington makes a great play against the Redskins today.

Also, Rashard Mendenhall ius a top five back this week.  Love him at home against Oakland.

Finally, I think you play Austin Collie today with confidence.  Unlike Sidney Rice, Collie will produce immediately after the injury.

Cheers, enjoy the games,

Just thinkin' about tomorrow

Finally, we're back to a full slate this weekend, and I couldn;t be more excited.  LOTS of storylines to follow as we make the final puch toward the playoffs or start to prepare your roster for the playoffs.  Either way, let's take a look.

Actually, let's take a look backward first to the worst game the NFL has ever shown in technicolor.  It was shade your eyes bad from the Dolphins offense, highlighted by the series in the second half where Tyler Thigpen tripped over his own feet on consecutive plays.  A couple of takeaways from this game.  One, where was the wildcat?  There's no question Ronnie Brown could have played the position better than Thigpen.  So much for Brown seeing an increase in value.  Second, you CANNOT start a Dolphin if Thigpen remains at QB.  It's as simple as that.

Now, onto Week 11.

Sidney Rice finally returns to the Vikings passing game.  Can we rely on him, does it make Favre playable.  We'll see.  I'm endorsing Favre and sitting Rice, BTW.

Will Austin Collie play?  If he does, I like him against the Pats.

Who runs the ball for the Saints?  Does Reggie Bush get back in?  Ivory is out, I think.  Julius Jones?

Let's see how the Cowboys respond this week.  It's one thing to get jacked up once agianst a hated rival in a new coach's first game.  Now the Lions come to town.  They should be good, but I'm not in love with the 'Boys just yet.

Dez Bryant, however, is must start material.

I'm very interested to see how much run Bernard Scott gets against Buffalo with Benson banged up (and terrible).  Love starting RBs against the Bills.  By the way, shame on you if you have Benson and not Scott.

Vince Young has a great schedule down the stretch, starting with the Redskins this week.  Randy Moss could still be a factor too.  Remember what Mike Vick did to Washington last week?

Speaking of the 'Skins, is Portis really coming back to a major role?  Torain is out, so it's Portis and Keiliand Williams and your guess is as good as mine...

Beanie Wells is supposed to return, Beanie Wells is supposed to return, Beanie Well, Beanie Well, Beanie Well

The Jets passing game gets the Texans defense.  If the Houston offense shows, the Jets passing game will be huge.

Another good matchup for Troy Smith as the Bucs come to town.  I'm playing Crabtree and Vernon Davis to go along with Gore.

Let's see what Mike Vick can do against the Giants before we call him the league MVP.

Finally, will Tim Tebow continue to snipe scores from Knowshon Moreno Monday night?

Cheers,
TFAM

Sneaky pickups

There's about as much love for the gentlemen on the waiver wire right now as there is for Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan from all the owners who started Ryan Torian Monday night needing a few scant yards to earn a vital win in their respective leagues.  In other words.  We hate the waiver options this week and we hate Shanahan.

Check that, I hate Shanahan.

Anyway, there isn't much out there outside of Keiland Williams and Clinton Portis, but I can hardly recommend them if there's a goose egg looming when their coach pulls out the rug on you.  There's also Mike Goodson, and we learned today that DeAngelo Williams is out for the year.  Still, with that Vaughn character stealing the goal line and Jonathan Stewart still potentially in the mix, anyone who is playing meaningful games this time of year probably shouldn't be counting on Goodson.

Mainly, may I remind you that I wrote about handcuffs last week?  There is still time to do this, and I can virtually guarantee one stud RB is going down in the next couple of weeks.  I know you're all gamblers by nature, but I'd be adding these guys if I were you.  I'd also add Jerome Harrison to the list I published last week after his impressive Monday night performance.

Speaking of handcuffs, Cedric Benson didn't practice today.  Bernard Scott anyone?

As for receivers, is it time to just start any speculation play against the Texans?  Mike Thomas is the latest, but the Texans have allowed Seyi Ajirotutu and Thomas to go off in recent weeks and are the 32nd rated pass defense in the NFL.  Here's to the Jets this week.  With Cotchery out that's good news for Holmes, Edwards, Keller, and possibly Brad Smith or whoever is going to fill that #3 WR role.

Cheers,
TFAM

As Seen on TV

Anyone else watching the rebirth of the Michael Vick Experience tonight in Washington?  I mean, he's been good this year, but this is Michael Jordan on a football field tonight.  He's at a totally different level than the $40 million man.

$40 million.  Still just cannot believe that.

Anyway, my post Week 10 thoughts...

It has been written about, but do take notice that the Dolphins went to wildcat went Pennington and Henne went down.  We're going to see more of that formation starting Thursday against Chicago, and I think Ronnie Brown is a major benefactor.  He's a buy low guy right now.

So far, so good on Moss opening things up for CJMoss though...not so good.  I'm buying low on him too though.  He can be had very cheap, and the Titans have a nice playoff schedule.

That was Tom Brady, totally in control.  In the same game, you think the Steelers miss Hines?  Wow, Roethlisberger offered up a Carson Palmer special.  He had nothing going when the game was in doubt.

Let's not overrate Mike Wallace either.  It was almost all garbage time.

Ditto Matt Cassel.  I thought he was about to be benched, then he gets 450 yards.  Let's give him an Oscar (the Grouch), he disappeears early and often and loves the garbage time.

Dwayne Bowe though, I'm buying.  How can you not when Cassel looks for him on every play?

Dez Bryant is playing like 1998 Randy Moss right now.  He looks unstoppable, and had another 50 yard bomb in his grasp and overturned due to a bobble.

I still think Larry Fitzgerald can get his, but Derek Anderson is just awful.

If I need a kicker, I'm picking up Josh Brown.  Dome kicker, decent offense, big leg, and he makes everything.

It appears Troy Smith is a boon for the Niners skill guys. Who knew?  Not Mike Singletary apparently.

I'd sell Knowshon.  He isn't great and Tebow will continue to snipe the goal line.  Nice window this week to sell.

Javarris James is the goal line guy in Indy until Hart and/or Addai get back.  Donald Brown is awful.

I love that LeGarrette Blount had 6-78 early, I'm wondering what happened as he finished with 19-91.  I didn't see much of that game.

Shonn Greene 23 touches, LT 24.  I'm still starting LT due to the catches and likely goal line, but the gap is closing.

Not that it likely will matter due to the impending return of DeAngelo (and the ineptitude of the Panthers offense), but Mike Goodson was getting pulled at the goal line in favor of Josh Vaughn.

And back to Thursday, some guys get pulled at the stripe...but the Ravens take it one more step.  Ray Rice gets yanked for McGahee inside the 20!  That is just awful news for the Rice owners.  Actually, they used LeRon McClain in some short yardage situations.  He may be an add in TD only leagues.

Cheers,
TFAM

Sunday hunch

Just a reminder to check the weather this time of year.  As I look out at nine inches of snow I'm reminded that I don't ever want to depend on any Arizona Cardinals in a blizzard.  Today looks okay with the possible exception of Pittsburgh and Buffalo, but it looks like the weather may by past those places by their respective game times.

Today, I have a hunch that Braylon Edwards will return to Cleveland and score.  I love players in these type of games.  It isn't necessarily extra motivation for the player, I think the (good) coaches make an effort on the behalf of their players to try and allow them to shine in these situations.

I think Brandon Pettigrew is a top three tight end play this week. His numbers with Shaun Hill (25-269-1) were pretty good in Hill's four starts earlier in the year.

I have a hunch that Chad Pennington is going to be good for Brandon Marshall and that Marshall scores against Tennessee this week.

You want an against the grain hunch?  I think Dallas comes out and plays well today.  Just a hunch.  I like Miles Austin and Jon Kitna, and I don't think the Giants offense is going to light it up like people think.

Finally, today is the day that Mike Williams of Seattle gets back on the scoreboard.  I like him against the Cardinals.

Oh, and start LeGarrette Blount.

Cheers,
TFAM

Just thinkin' about...today?

Amidst the foot of snow and the 86 I shot at St. Andrew's yesterday (it was sim golf, but I was still pleased), I pulled off a major trade in my dynasty league sending away Peyton Hillis and Mike Crabtree for Larry Fitzgerald.  I know Fitz is down this year, but that won't continue to be the case, right?  Hillis undoubtedly is at the peak of his value right now, and while I like him, there are few guarantees with his future.  Of course, the last time I wrote about a trade I made I was struck by the fantasy gods' bolt of lightning hours later, so I'm expecting Fitz to shatter his pelvis today.

Other than shattered pelves here are the biggest Week 10 storylines in my mind that we should all be following.

Two struggling quarterbacks face significantly different challenges.  Matt Schaub has his now or never game against the Jags, and Tom Brady steps into the lion's den in Pittsburgh.  Only one will come out alive.  Or something like that.  I actually think Brady plays well today.

And getting back to Peyton Hillis, he gets the second best run defense in the league today in the Jets.

In the same game, the Jets are hinting that we are going to see more Shonn Greene down the stretch.  I bet LT keeps the goal line, making both questionable plays.

Can we trust Crabtree, Frank Gore and Vernon Davis in the hands of Troy SmithSmith has had two weeks to prepare, so we should find out.

What exactly are we supposed to do with the Arizona running game?

What impact will Jason Garrett have on Dallas?  Doesn't Miles Austin have to be more involved today?  I'm also curious to know if the running game will be status quo.

Shaun Hill is back for the Lions.  That offense really didn't miss a beat earlier in the season, and I'm not expecting anything different know.

Randy Moss will impact the Titans today.  I would bet on a score and a nice offensive performance.

LeGarrette Blount gets the Panthers and a chance to seal his grasp on that job.  Will the Bucs turn to Caddy in the first half again or turn over the keys immediately.

Monday night McNabb returns home to face the Eagles, and while most people will be talking about McNabb and Vick, I'm more interested in Torain, and the update on Clinton Portis.

I'll be back in an hour with the Sunday hunch.

Cheers,
TFAM

Sneaky Pickups

I feel a bit bummed that I didn't get Seji Ajirotutu last week.  He'd have been perfect for this space...he apparently was also perfect for my opponents line up, which cost me a victory.

Anyway, I think Shaun Hill and Chad Pennington are nice adds in two QB leagues, Hill was great earlier this year.  I guess I could also talk myself into Mike Goodson for a week, mainly because Mike Turner just torched the Bucs.  Still, that Carolina offense is hide the women and children bad at this point.

The sneakiest of the pickups this week are the handcuffs.  As your bye weeks are winding down, it's time to cut bait with fringe guys on your roster (Ricky Williams, Mike Bell, Ladell Betts, Cadillac Williams, etc.) and handcuff your studs.  With bye weeks these days its hard to carry most of these guys all season, but now is the time.  So, that means Toby Gerhart, Anthony Dixon, Bernard Scott, Javon Ringer, Deji Karim, Derrick Ward, Jason Snelling, and Kenneth Darby can all be owned.  Trust me, you want to be on the front of this and not scarmbling to add Gerhart or Dixon later.

Cheers,
TFAM

As Seen on TV

As much as I tore him apart earlier in the year, Brandon Jackson deserves some credit for regaining fantasy relevance over the last month,  He's certainly a fantasy factor now, and an easy top 20 RB going forward.

Who else caught my eye yesterday?

Steve Johnson is the real deal.  Fitzpatrick seems to be looking for him on every play, and I've seen him make some big catches.  He may be a top 10 WR next week against Detroit.

I am literally pounding your head into the wall, but if I have to watch Thomas Jones get stuffes on consecutive 3rd and 4th and 1's one more time...Not like that was a big game for the Chiefs or anything.

Yes, Chester Taylor is your new goal line back in Chicago, and Matt Forte is a bench guy until further notice.

I still believe Fred Jackson is the Bills goal line guy.  Corey McIntyre was the fullback on his TD from the one.

Your Lions goal line guy?  Kevin Smith.

For two games in a row, at least to my eye, Shonn Greene has looked better than LT.  Could still have value.  Same with Spiller.

What can you say about Peyton Hillis?  And Colt McCoy is not killing his value.  Hillis does have that Week 16 Ravens matchup looming in the playoffs, but he did torch them last time.

Arian Foster looked great Sunday, but the holes in the Chargers run defense were cavernous.

You want no part of any Saints RB.  They rotate plays at this point with seemingly no rhyme or reason.  It an exercise in frustration.

Apparently Dallas Clark is no special shakes.  Jacob Tamme comes in and looks even better than Clark used to, and conveniently took over the role of Indianapolis TE ready to crush my team.

It may be a bit early on this, but Dez Bryant sure looks like the number one WR in Dallas.

Sunday Hunch

It's post #300 for TFAM, and we're still running strong.  Thanks to all of you who read, post questions and comment.  I'm happy to do what I do.  Please continue to support the blog and let me know what you'd like to see me write about in the future.

Today of course, is Sunday morning, and the Sunday hunch is here.

The Chargers are the number one ranked pass defense in the league.  Do not let that stop you from starting Schaub, Johnson and even Jones.  I think it's a shootout in Houston today.

Same game, I think this is, finally, Ryan Matthews day.  He's a great play against the Texans.

Start Peyton Hillis against the Pats.  Another 75-100 yards and a touchdown is in the bank.

I'm benching Matt Forte today if I have a resonable alternative.  The Chester Taylor goal line stuff worries me.  Matter of fact, it is a very nice sell moment on Forte this morning.  You can hype the matchup of Buffalo.

One more big fantasy star today?  James Jones.  No Driver, no Finley, gotta love James Jones agianst a defense that just gave up five TDs to Jacksonville.

Cheers,
TFAM

Just thinkin' about tomorrow

One of the things I'll be watching tomorrow in the NFL is Anthony Gonzalez...checking to see if he can keep it going with the Colts and their passing atta...sigh.  NOT a surprise that Gonzo is again, out for the year.

Among other non-surprises this week....

Brad Childress making himself look stupid.

Randy Moss convincing another fan base that he is worth it.

And onto what I will be looking forward to checking out tomorrow in the ninth week of the NFL season.

Will Austin Collie play?  If so, is he back to the early season form that saw him atop the fantasy WR rankings?

Donald Brown finally gets his chance.  I'm not holding my breath.

Will the Vikings throw the ball?  Do they need to?  Will they intentionally sabotage Childress?

Encore, LeGarrette Blount?

I'm very interested in the Texans-Chargers game.  Who catches the ball for San Diego?  Is this Ryan Matthews time?  What about Jacoby Jones vs Kevin Walter?  Is Andre's ankle still a factor?  And will the Chargers be able to comeback from their double digit deficit in the first quarter?

Nice game in Detroit, where the Jets ground game should get off, and Megatron gets a tough matchup.

Is Jon Stewart NFL relevant anymore?

Charlie Whitehurst vs. Eli Manning.  Careful, Eli usually starts to swoon when we hit November.  This could be the start in a tough place to play.

Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson, back in the fold.

Can Ray Rice get it going?  He has been a non-factor in 2010.

Can Larry Fitzgerald build on the two TDs from last week?  Derek Anderson is a start (for Larry, not in general).

Sunday hunch tomorrow...

Cheers,
TFAM

Sneaky Pickups

Sorry I'm a bit late on the pickups this week.  It doesn't really matter 'cause these are the under the radar guys anyway, right?  I'll make it up to you with a bonus column either Thursday or Friday.  I gave you Paul Milsap, didn't I?

I also told you in August Calvin Johnson was the number two WR in fantasy.

Anyway, speaking of WRs, what about Steve Breaston?  Is he out there in your league?  I feel like he has flown under the radar, partially due to injury, but he's topped 100 or scored in three of four this season and is coming off an 8-147 game.

It also may be time to nab Keiland Williams.  I've talked about him before, but you have a chance to get him cheap now, before we actually know how bad Torain's hamstring is.  You won't get him cheap this time next week if Torain starts missing practices.

Said it last week, but worth mentioning Vincent Jackson and Sidney Rice one more time.  Austin Collie is also apparently healing quick.  He is likely back within two weeks.

Finally, what about Javarris JamesMike Hart is now down in addition to Joe AddaiDonald Brown couldn't finish the game Monday...

As seen on TV

As I write, the Texans are ignoring a wide open Andre Johnson all over the field so they can throw to Kevin Walter, Jacoby Jones and Derrick Ward.  Two of my fantasy teams are in big trouble tonight if that continues, and the dreams of an undefeated season will go the way of the moa.

Anyway, what was interesting yesterday on TV?

Let's start with Randy Moss.  First of all, if there is a worse coach in the NFL than Brad Childress I know nothing about football (and that's saying a lot considering Norv Turner is still in the league).  Now, Randy made a couple of terrible plays yesterday, most notably on a pass interference call, but to say he was a non factor like I've heard all day today is silly.  Troy Aikman pointed out time after time how the Pats were doubling Moss with a deep safety, which is precisely why Percy Harvin went well over 100 and Adrian Peterson saw so many holes early.  Both lose value with Moss and his double teams gone.  Actually, they lose a lot of value, as I'm not sure Bernard Berrian requires single coverage at this point.  He can't catch the football.

As a fantasy player, Moss is no more than a WR3 wherever he goes at this point.  What makes us think he'll perform somewhere else if he can't get it done with Brady or Favre?

LeGarrette Blount isn't that shifty, but he can run the football.  Great power, and he got the goal line.  I'm buying, not selling at this point.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis is certainly viable in the Pats offense.  They are proving me wrong by committing to the running game.  Great game by BGE yesterday.

As much as we don't believe in Derek Anderson, he is much better than Max Hall for Larry Fitz.  Much better.

Which makes me laugh thinking about the time Derek Anderson made the Pro Bowl.  I remember him trying to lead a game winning draive missing his open receivers by 10 yards.  Chad Johnson (at the time) had to be thinking, "I get this in the Pro Bowl?????"

It is certainly worth noting that Ricky Williams got a goal line score.  It may be that the Dolphins just stick with whoever is in the game, but I haven't seen Ronnie in at the goal line for a while.  Actually, I don't see Miami at the goal line much.  Hail Dan Carpenter!

It appears the roar has been restored in the Stafford to Johnson connection in Detroit.  He's unstoppable, and his own team has finally figured that out.

Jahvid Best, 12 carries.  Kevin Smith, 12 carries.

It appears as if Keiland Williams is the guy in Washington if Torain can't go next game.  They do have a bye next week, so Torain may have a chance.  Still, Williams is a must add.

The verdict in Dallas?  Kitna is not going to be that bad for the Dallas passing game.  He looked okay, and the picks were drops as much as they were picks.  Witten gains value, Austin loses a little, but doesn't crash.  I'm still waiting for Tashard ChoiceFelix stinks.

Sunday Hunch

What I need right now is Sunday brunch. with lots of liquids.  And Bacon.

What you need is Sunday Hunch, and what we all need is for me to do a little better than the 50% or worse I've been throwing out the last couple of weeks.  Today will be the day.  I'm feeling it.

I have a hunch Marion Barber is a good start today.  I'm just feeling at least one touchdown against the Jags.

I have a hunch LeGarrette Blount outscores Cadillac Williams today and cements that role.

I also think Beanie Wells is going off in that game.  At least 100 and a score for Beanie.

Lots of people talking up the Saints pass defense and saying Roethlisberger is a marginal start this week.  I'm not buying that at all.  Start Ben with confidence.

I have a hunch Jason Witten is the best Dallas WR/TE to play today.

I was slightly wrong on this last week, but I have good reason to go back to the well.  Danny Woodhead is the Pats RB to play today against the Vikes.

Just thinkin' about tomorrow

Thanks to my brother, we have a fantastic video to share this week.  Let it be known that I will be just as jubilant as these guys were if Jamaal Charles takes one to the house from distance this weekend against Buffalo, or should I say when?

Here is what else I will be following in the NFL this week, which makes the halfway point of the fantasy season.

Six teams are on the bye, so fantasy lineups will be thin, and many guys are brought into play off waiver wires.

Does that make Anthony Gonzalez relevant this week?  I like him with Collie and Clark out.  The problem is, we aren't sure he's fully healthy, and he plays Monday night.  It wouldn't be the worst thing to try and have both Gonzo and Jacoby Jones ready to go, then decide who to play as the game approaches.

I'm still intrigued by Danny Woodhead.  The last time the Pats played the Vikings they threw the entire game (only eight rushes before the game was decided in the 4th).  I'd expect the same this week, which means a lot of Woodhead.

It's about time for one of the Miami backs to become relevant, no?

How does Jon Kitna change what we expect from the Dallas guys?  The Jaguars at home may be the easiest game on the rest of the slate.  It's now or never.  I love Jason Witten this week.

I'm interested in Matt Stafford to see if he can be as good or better than Shaun Hill, and how his presence effects Calvin.

What about the revival of the passing game in Buffalo?  Is Ryan Fitzpatrick the only fantasy relevant Fitz?  I'd still take Larry by a wide margin.  I'd play Steve Johnson this week though.

Not exactly a get well game for New Orleans against Pittsburgh.

How will the Colts running game shake out with no Addai?  What will the split be with Hart/Brown?

What does Troy Smith do to Gore, Davis, and Crabtree?

How long will it take until the Titans are up 17 on San Diego?

There is a lot of buzz about Beanie Wells right now.  You have to like him this weke against Tampa.  I think a huge game is in store.

Speaking of running back in that game.  I think we will get a pretty clear idea of what the Bucs have in store for us in the second half of the season in reagrds to their backfield (Blount/Williams).

Finally, the Favre/T-Jack siutation.  Does Chilly let Favre play the whole game?  If Jackson comes in, can he help the situation of Vikings' fantasy owners?

Sneaky Pickups

I'm there are a lot of names with different values to talk about for pickups this week, and certainly some adds will depend, as always, on roster size.

Sidney Rice and Vincent Jackson could see action in a month.  Now would be the time to be ahead of the curve on these two.  I'm not sure which I'd want more, the one who isn't healthy or the one who is locked in a mutual hatefest with his own team.

Jacoby Jones is interesting.  Kevin Walter was an afterthought in the Texans last game.

LaGarrette Blount is the pickup of the week.  As I wrote yesterday, he went for 11-72 in the second half alone Sunday busting tackles and running hard in the process.  The Bucs are going to be looking toward the future at the end of the season, and I keep writing this, but they play the Lions and Bills in the fantasy playoffs.

Chester Taylor is a very nice add in a TD heavy format with the news breaking this week that the team plans to use him at the goal line.

Anthony Gonzalez is out there in many leagues, and should be added at least for a week to see if he is healthy and good enough to fill the Austin Collie/Dallas Clark void.

Finally, I don't really know what to do with these two guys, but Steve Johnson has scored five times in his last four games for Buffalo.  I'd rather have him than Lee Evans, I think, and David Gettis came out of nowhere for 8-125-2 against the hapless 49ers.  I'd take Johnson over Gettis, but I would add both if I had the room.  Remember, it's better to be ahead of the curve and be wrong than be behind the curve and wrong (or right, I guess) in fantasy football.  If you were behind the curve last year you missed out on Jamaal Charles and Miles Austin thinking that their breakouts were flukes.  Same with Peyton Hills this year.  Johnson or Gettis could be good.  We just don't know yet.  Heck, I'm behind the curve on Steve Johnson, clearly, and I'm mad about it.

As Seen on TV

I was just thinking that I need to get a basketball column up in light of the NBA opener tonoght, then figured that none of you care about anything other than football right now.  Am I right?  For now, go get Amare Stoudemire, Kevin Love, Paul Milsap, Blake Griffin and DJ Augustin.  That should tide you over until I get back to hoops.

What did I see in the NFL this weekend?

Let's work backwards.  The Romo injury is a crusher to thw whole Dallas offense except....Jason WittenKitna doesn't have the arm Romo does (and let's be honest, he probably doesn't have my arm right now either), and he immediately started looking inside more than Romo did.  Turned it into Witten's best game of the year.

Still not buying Brandon Jacobs, but he is siphoning value from Bradshaw right now.

Also not buying Brandon Jackson.  Vikings let the Packers run on first and second all night.  They played pass.  Jackson stinks, although he did get a goal line carry.

I'm worried about Tom Brady.  He just isn't piling up fantasy points any more, and it appears Moss' exit has had a negative effect on Welker as well.

Favre will play in New England.  Risky start though.

I love the Buffalo Bills.  They have 30 holes on their team, many of which are at the three most important positions on the field (QB/OL/DL).  So the spend a top 10 pick on the one position where they have a surplus, then don't even play the guy.  Just crazy.

Go get LaGarrette Blount.  He's the pickup of the week.  His entire 11-72 came in the second half and Cadillac is just a third down guy now.  Great speculative add.  He ran hard, broke tackles and looked good.

Jay Cutler.  Wow.  Even his two best plays of the day, the TD to Knox and another long pass, were inches away from being picked.

I liked how Ryan Torain ran hard.  He did fumble multiple times though.  Better clear that up with Shanny around.

Seems like we're going back and forth, but with Barber getting all the carries inside the 10, he's still a 50/50 bet week to week with Felix.

Kevin Kolb's arm is not built for long throws.

I can't even talk about Thomas Jones.  OK, I can.  Here's the deal.  Jamaal Charles gets a carry from first and goal at the four yard line.  He scores.  Thomas Jones takes care of the next drive by needing four carries to get in from the three.  DO WE NEED MORE EVIDENCE?  I hate that Jones busted a long run to inflate his stats.

This isn't a coaching blog, but the challenge usage by Lovie Smith and Brad Childress was historic yesterday, and it cost them both football games.

And finally, how about the Chargers.  Does Norv have Phil Rivers on his fantasy team or what?  They go down by 17 points in the first half every game!

Sunday Hunch

Let's get right to it...

I've been high on him all week, I've written about him a lot, I spent most of the rest of my FAAB budget in my dynasty league on him....Danario Alexander scores again this week.

I think that the Eagles offense is finally grounded in Tennessee this week.

CJ Spiller will outscore Fred Jackson today.

Knowshon Moreno goes over 100 and scores against Oakland today.  Then you have to trade him.

Danny Woodhead scores more fantasy points than BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

Enjoy the games...cheers,
TFAM

Just thinkin' about...today?

I have lifted my two day blog boycott in order to please you, the readers.  But, I'll say this.  If I write about another guy on one of my teams that goes down for 4-6 weeks about three minutes after I write, I may call it quits.

Special shout out to my buddy Johnny for apparently being tight with the Colts training staff.  Maybe he sent them a copy of Silverdust just beofre he sent Austin Collie to the Truffle Shuffle.

Sunday hunch is coming in an hour, but here are the Week 7 NFL storylines to follow for fantasy purposes.

My man Danario Alexander.  One hit wonder?  I think not.

Sticking with the Rams-Bucs, What are the Buccaneers going to do with their running game?  We should get an idea aagainst a defense that can be had.  The Bucs playoff sked is fantasy friendly to RBs, with the Lions and Seahawks at home.

Ryan Torain, please make up for my horrid trade and continue to produce like a quality #2 RB against the Bears.

Is Danny Woodhead a viable fantasy contributor?

Is Brandon Tate going to rebound, or is he an afterthought?

The Chiefs continue a run against terrible defenses, and I've been hyping their schedule all year.  Just a segway to the weekly Jamaal Charles-Thomas Jones watch.

Can Matt Moore save the Carolina Panther?  It's already on the endangered list, and is about to move into extinction territory.

Chris Ivory has a nice chance to follow up against Cleveland at home.  I'm still not convinced he gets the goal line.

Is Marques Colston even startable any more?  Again, the Browns....

I'm still watching the goal line in Baltimore, and in the same game I have to believe the Bills spent their bye week wondering why they spent a top 10 pick on CJ Spiller if they weren't going to use him.

Trade analysis

I just made my second trade of the year today, and wanted to post my thoughts.  My first trade was last week when a competing owner (and defending champion of the league, so he's no slouch) gave me Ronnie Brown for LaGarrette Blount.  Not sure ahy that happened, and I'm not the biggest Ronnie Brown guy, but Blount was inacitve Sunday, right?

Anyway, I dealt Malcom Floyd and Darren McFadden for Austin Collie and Ryan Torain.  From my side, I had been rolling with LaDainian Tomlinson and Mike Tolbert as my two RBs for the last few weeks since D-Mac went down with his hammy.  I also have the $39 Shonn Greene on my bench (neat).  Obviously, I needed a #2 RB badly, and Torain was the only one I knew of that was being actively shopped.  Floyd hurts to lose, but, let's be honest, I just dealt two injured guys.  Who know when they will retun and what roles they will step into at that point.  My WRs are in decent shape with Andre Johnson, Collie, my man Danario, Dez Bryant and Aaron Hernandez.  I'd love a #2 guy to fit in between my trio of #3's and Andre, and Floyd was that guy.  But, I do have a surplus at QB (Romo, Favre, Eli) from which to deal from at fill that hole, and it's a two QB league so Favre and Eli do have great value.  I just find that it is easier to pry a #2 WR away in a trade than a #2 RB, so I secured the RB and will shop for the WR in a couple weeks after Eli's bye week.

Think I did okay here?  Obvioulsy there is risk.  Torain is no lock, and the opposing owner (who consistently brings it in this league) certainly sold high on Collie.

Cheers,
TFAM
